Half Moon resort

Half moonHalf Moon aims to become a ‘full’ moon by becoming the world's most environmentally aware hotel.  This is the long-term goal of the luxury resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and it can already boast a shelf-full of green awards.   The vision of environmental perfection came from managing director Richard Whitfield.  There is a full-time environment officer, Debita Whyte, who has an assistant, and the hotel’s initiatives already include:

  • Re-use of wastewater.  Last year, the hotel achieved 66 per cent volume.
  • Solar energy - the hotel has five sets of panels that provide hot water for the laundry, kitchen and staff cottages.
  • Wood shavings from the furniture workshop become bedding for the horses at the equestrian centre.  The manure, plus fruit and vegetable kitchen waste, is turned into compost for potted plants and for the hotel nursery, where oleander, hibiscus, bougainvillea, herbs, melons and tomatoes are grown.
  • In helping the local community, Half Moon has supported the Barrett Town All Age School by supplying staff to upgrade bathroom facilities, carry out repairs and clean up the grounds.
  • Tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams hosted a master-class for local tennis club children earlier this year as part of Half Moon’s commitment to sporting efforts in the community.
