Nairobi, Kenya

KenyaA cup of tea has led to a pot of happiness for the Kawangware Street Children in Nairobi, Kenya.  Staff from CC Africa’s Kichwa Tembo Lodge had to buy water before they could brew up when they called to give an educational talk on HIV/Aids to the 60 children and youths rescued from the streets.  This inspired the visitors – who will raise the money through tea-time snacks and donations - to pledge to install a tank and plumbing to provide clean healthy water for the refuge.  It will allow them to connect to the main council supply delivered once a week, instead of fetching water.

The goodness that has come out of an old-fashioned “cuppa” is one of many drives and initiatives springing from CC Africa, which channels $US3million annually in the cause of conservation and community projects via lease fees, product and service payments.  It employs 2,500-plus people – 90% from local communities. And in tandem with Africa Foundation, has achieved targets including:

  • Raising and committing $US5.5million to consultative community development projects in 6 African countries
  • Built more than 120 classrooms and 19 pre-schools; trained 250 teachers and 4,500 pupils in environmental awareness; built 3 clinics – one of which, the Mduku Clinic outside Phinda Private Game Reserve, is open 24 hours a day and serves over 11,000.
  • Implemented water programmes, such as guttering and rainwater tanks, at many schools and supplied over 5 000 hippo water rollers to rural families.
