&beyond logo &Beyond, South Africa – AF164
&Beyond will be doing a massive drive around conservation lessons in the week of WRTD. These environmental awareness lessons give children in the surrounding communities of their lodges the opportunity to experience the natural heritage of their country which helps to bring about positive change in attitudes, increased responsibility and awareness of the value of conservation and tourism.
In addition, &Beyond is mailing 100 plantable greeting cards to the South African media, made from recycled paper and embedded with seeds of an indigenous South African daisy. The card invites recipients to celebrate the day, plant the card, and also includes information on selected &Beyond plant, greening and carbon sequestering initiatives.

 

Access Africa Safaris Ltd Access Africa Safaris Ltd, Uganda – AF650
Access Africa Safaris Ltd will be highlighting WTM WRTD on their stand, exhibiting and encouraging responsible travel with particular emphasis on Voluntours and poverty tours to Uganda.

  Africa Inside Out, UK based
Africa Inside Out is an independent travel agent and tour operator, offering tailor made holidays in southern Africa that are built around the people.  All of their tours are authentic, local suppliers are used as much as possible and accommodation is in the local community, they believe in sustainable support.  Africa Inside Out not only offer responsible holidays but voluntary work in South Africa and Namibia, they also work with The Dreamcatcher Foundation, community based tourism in South Africa.  All of their projects are ongoing.

 

  African Environments Ltd – AF460
Supporting WTM WRTD for the first time, African Environments Ltd will be changing their website on the day to highlight WRTD, there will be slide show on their stand showing ways of being ‘responsible’ and talking to their clients about their social responsibility.

  Afrika T, South Africa
Afrika T are planning a series of pieces on their website leading up to WTM WRTD and covering the events during WTM. Their blog is dedicated to covering responsible tourism experiences and issues in Southern Africa, helping guide travellers to responsible tourism experiences.

  Cape To Cape Adventure Ltd, UK
Supporting WTM WRTD for the first time, Cape To Cape Adventure Ltd support community based tourism which is included in all their itineraries. They work in partnership with local entrepreneurs, fund school fees for children from deprived backgrounds, fund Winter Soup kitchens in deprived and poverty stricken areas, fund Day Trips for poor kids to the beach and provide clothes to Street Children. They will be highlighting the day on their website.

 

  Dar Tassa, Morocco
Dar Tassa is a luxury Moroccan guest house in the high Atlas Mountains.  Dar Tassa’s philosophy encapsulates everything that is associated with “responsible tourism”, employing local people in the maintenance and running of the guesthouse and re-investing part of the money earned back into the local community.  To highlight WTMWRTD for another year, Dar Tassa will be spending the day with a local school teaching them about the environment and how we can all take part in saving it.

 

  Elangeni African Adventures, Germany
Supporting WTM WRTD for the first time this year, Elangeni African Adventures will be highlighting the day by sending a newsletter to their contact database made up of 3000 recipients, including clients, competitors and tourism industry stakeholders.

 

 

FEDHASA (Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa), South Africa
FEDHASA has managed the Imvelo Responsible Tourism Awards for the past nine years.  Imvelo has become a yardstick for responsible tourism practice in South Africa.  A record number of 219 entries were received this year and the awards ceremony will take place in Johannesburg on World Responsible Tourism Day.

 

  Heritage Environmental, South Africa
The Heritage Environmental Management Company has been established to provide operators of all types of businesses with an effective environmental management system (EMS) designed to reduce and limit the impact that their operations have on their environment.  To highlight WTM WRTD 2010 they have released GreenLine, Africa’s first responsible tourism certification programme for the tourism sector.

 

  International Travel & Tours, South Africa –  Stand AF407
International Travel & Tours, South Africa have supported WTM WRTD since 2007 and are continuing to motivate their suppliers to implement responsible tourism practices in their businesses.  Sending out questionnaires that ask each supplier what they are doing to support environmental, social & economic responsibilities. These questionnaires highlight educational and mentoring needs, as well as providing a guide to operators and agents abroad as to who is following responsible tourism practices.

  Karibu Rwanda Ltd, UK based
Karibu Rwanda passionately support sustainable ways of living in harmony with wildlife, ecosystems and the environment with a strong belief that tourism should be seen as a way of preserving and protecting the environment. One of the directors owns a 120 acre pine and eucalyptus forest in Mityana-Uganda and a further 470 acres have been identified towards the organisation’s carbon emissions offset efforts. For every holiday and flight booked in 2010/11, Karibu Rwanda will donate an equivalent cost of planting a tree in both Rwanda and Uganda. Karibu Rwanda is indentifying charitable organisations that they can partner with in both Rwanda and Uganda for raising funds for specific conservation projects in the region. 2010, sees them promoting the Ib’wacyu Village Project, an ecotourism project in Ruhengeri, Rwanda. The project promotes ecotourism in the Volcanoes National Park and aims to benefit local communities around the Virungas. Karibu Rwanda are also promoting the Kinigi Guest House which is run by and for the benefit of widows and orphans

 

  Let’s Go Travel, Kenya
Supporting WTM WRTD since 2007, UNIGLOBE Let’s Go Travel are supporting two projects, one is the purchase of a tractor run on kerosene to help the Ilngwesi to collect firewood and to help them carry stones and other requirements for road building which will reduce the wear and tear on vehicles visiting the conservancy. The second project is supporting the Kalalu Secondary School and to encourage school groups to take part in cultural exchange.  The Kingsfield Secondary School in Bristol are visiting this July. They also provide them with used computers. Let’s Go Travel’s Managing Director is also on the tourism sub committee of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum who assist with community tourism enterprises within the area.

 

  Livingstone Tanzania Trust, UK based
The Livingstone Tanzania Trust provides volunteers the opportunity to live and work alongside the community in realizing the community’s development plans.  They strive to alleviate poverty through education for children and adults alike.  The Trust is teaching sustainability to the community and have planted 1300 trees, trained three local women’s groups to manufacture and sell fuel efficient stoves to reduce the demand for firewood.  The Trust has a demonstration farm that shows the community how they could improve their livelihoods and improve their resilience.  Their newest project is to build a residential agricultural training centre.

 

  Luzmore Tourism Development, South Africa
Supporting WTM WRTD for the first time this year, Luzmore Tourism Development is organising a volunteer “Help sort Recycling for a day” to raise awareness in their area of the importance of recycling, what can be recycled and to show the community what not to put in landfill sites.

 

  M & J Travel and Tours Limited, Ghana – Stand AF4675
Supporting WTM WRTD for the third year, M & J Travel and Tours Limited aspire to be carbon neutral by 2012. The company has also become more aware of environmental standards and the need to abide by them through the implementation of ISO 14001:2004 certification which was started with the Ghana Standard Board. They have also established a Sustainability Section in their organization to implement climate change mitigation activities. Part of their corporate social responsibility includes the reforestation of over 1,000 acres of degraded land at Paga Buru-Kazigo in partnership with the traditional tribal chief and the local community. Each year 50,000 indigenous trees will be planted and the project is also to build the capacity of the rural community for green jobs and to alleviate poverty.

  MIBE’S Hospitality Ltd, Ghana – Ghana Tourist Board
Supporting WTM WRTD for another year, MIBE’S Hospitality Ltd are partnering with a USA organisation to supply water pumps to a village in Ghana who currently have no pipe-borne water.


  Nyore Tourist Village, Uganda – UK based
Nyore Tourist Village has been actively involved in practicing responsible tourism since it began in 2007. Community Based Tourism has been at the heart of what they strive for and through this tourism the rural and most beautiful parts of Uganda have been beginning to flourish. The company encourages voluntary engagement and community participation.

 

 

Ol Tukai Lodge, Kenya – AF350
Highlighting WTM WRTD for the second time, the Ol Tukai Lodge in Kenya has strategically planned initiatives in conjunction with the Amrit Foundation targeting rural community development projects in and around the Amboseli National Park. One of their more recent projects have included confidence donating to help young ladies at local schools by donating boxes of sanitary towels to them.  The lodge has also taken proactive steps and acted to preserve the fauna in and around its perimeters together with working closely with wildlife organisations, AWF and ACC to protect the wildlife in the National Park.

 

  One World Safari Tours, Tanzania
Supporting WTM WRTD for the first time this year, One World Safari Tours will be highlighting the day on their website and via their emails.

Robin Pope Safaris, Zambia – AF140
Robin Pope Safaris will be highlighting WTM WRTD by promoting the launch of Project Luangwa.  This project ensures that the local community in the Luangwa Valley gains the full benefit from tourism by investing in education and business development.  Project Luangwa is a charitable organisation formed by the Safari Operators of South Luangwa. Their aim is to create an effective, co-ordinated approach to helping local communities improve their long term economic prospects whilst avoiding a negative impact on the environment and wildlife.

 

 

Serendipity Africa, South Africa
This year Serendipity Africa has three different dynamics to their activities which are primarily aimed at awareness raising and motivation.  Firstly, their Director will be highlighting WTM WRTD at the Imvelo Responsible Tourism Awards as a member of their adjudication panel.  Secondly they are working with TICE (the Travel Industry Charity Events committee) raising money for sustainable developments in three Western Cape locations and thirdly, educating the members of SKAL International Cape Town.

 

  The Dreamcatcher Foundation, South Africa (UK based)
The mission of The Dreamcatcher Foundation is to change words into action and literally Walk the Talk to put an end to poverty permanently, for an identified number of individuals in impoverished communities across South Africa.  Dreamcatcher was founded 25 years ago by Anthea Rossouw.  Dreamcatcher's work is to help people to help themselves out of the poverty trap and to bring lasting dignity, skills and training to women, their families and communities situated across South Africa by job creation through the micro business programme of Dreamcatcher.

 

  The Mozambique Collection, South Africa
The Mozambique Collection is made up of five members, Guludo Beach Lodge, Ibo Island Lodge, Manda Wilderness Nkwichi Lodge, Nuarro Luxury Eco Lodge and Explore Gorongosa.  Each of these companies run community and environmental projects.  Guludo Beach Lodge has scholarship programs, water supply projects and are constructing of education and sanitation centres.  Ibo Island Lodge runs a Montessori school and they help source raw materials for the local silversmiths.  Manda Wilderness, Nkwichi Lodge has built seven schools, a maize mill and a maternity clinic as well as help set up an association for the local community to manage their land.  Nuarro Luxury Eco Lodge has provided employment together with building a centre with education and medical facilities.

 

  Uganda Wildlife Adventure & Tours Ltd, Uganda
Highlighting WTM WRTD for the first time this year, Uganda Wildlife Adventure & Tours will be painting and marking out walk ways and trails within the Uganda Wildlife Center as a means of helping to protect the green belt.

  Voycom Tourism Ghana
Voycom Tourism Ghana are supporting and highlighting the WTM WRTD for the first time this year. They create awareness of responsible tourism in rural areas and develop Community Tourism. To highlight WTM WRTD 2010 they have planned a week of activities including the launch of WTM WRTD with a radio talk show, holding an inter schools and clubs quiz, organizing a race walk awareness and float, holding a public forum on responsible tourism and the travel market, planning interactions with hotel associations, car rental organisations, tour operators, traditional caterers association, drinking bar and nightclub associations. Their final activity is the climax of WTM WRTD at a local hotel with a guest of honour.

  Welcome Cameroun, Cameroon
Highlighting WTM WRTD for the first time this year, Welcome Cameroun is a young Cameroonian association promoting responsible tourism in Central Africa, starting with Cameroon. The organisation will be raising awareness through radio stations and banners located in at least two cities, Yaounde and Douala.

West Africa Discovery West Africa Discovery - UK based
West Africa Discovery are once again supporting WTM WRTD, linking with Responsible Tourism professionals to exchange ideas and to create awareness towards the West Africa Discovery project to promote responsible tourism ventures that have implemented, or are working towards the implementation of policies outlined in the Cape Town Declaration, Kerala and Belize Declarations of Responsible Tourism in destinations.

  White Shark Projects, South Africa
White Shark Projects (WSP) is a world-leading organisation that focuses on the conservation of the great white shark through responsible tourism and research. They are involved in conservation, films, education, diving and viewing. White Shark Projects support their staff and local communities through The White Shark Projects Annual Gold Day which raises funds for local old age centres, raising funds for the Ikamva Youth Development and Computer Centre in Blompark, Gansbaai through educational talks and outings. Their latest initiative is in the Blompark Community where they have ‘adopted’ the Grade 1 class at the primary school, giving bi-monthly talks, organizing outings, clean-up campaigns and an introduction to their agents and visitors. They hold a ‘White Shark Projects Swop Shop’ set up in the Masakhane community, children collect recyclable litter from their community and earn points that can buy stationary and basic clothing. WSP hold an Agent’s Day Initiative for local and international agents and an Open Network Day inviting all their suppliers, local business and accommodation and activity owners to attend. WSP also organise Volunteer Programmes where students learn about shark biology, research, conservation, seamanship, underwater filming, photography and shark tourism. Their newest activity is the setting up of the White Shark Employees Trust.

Wilderness Safaris Wilderness Safaris, South Africa – Stand AF210
Wilderness Safaris is a conservation organisation and ecotourism company dedicated to responsible tourism throughout the areas in which they operate in southern Africa. They are involved in a large number of ongoing projects and initiatives including the North Island Rehabilitation Project, Botswana Rhino Reintroduction Project, Children in the Wilderness Programme and Damaraland Community Partnership to name a few. Wilderness Safaris have been practicing responsible tourism principles for the past 26 years, their most recent initiative involves cutting their carbon usage to achieve an even lighter footprint for themselves and to mitigate the impact of hosting guests in their camps.

 

  ZM Finance Project, UK based
ZM Finance Project is a social enterprise aimed at funding poverty relief operations in Africa, helping local communities develop, funding micro projects, promoting children’s education within rural areas, promoting the Congo Basin Forest in Equatorial Africa and empowering women through healthcare mutual insurance.  They will be supporting WTM WRTD through their website and Facebook page.

Zuru Africa Safaris & Cultural Centre support their local communities through cultural tourism.  This year they will be highlighting WTM WRTD with the introduction of agro tourism to the community.
